Winter Reminder: Keeping Cluster Mailboxes Clear in Keeseville

Dear Keeseville Neighbors,

As the first snowflakes begin to fall and Old Man Winter settles in, we want to send a friendly reminder about an important community responsibility: snow removal around our USPS cluster mailboxes.

Why It Matters

The United States Postal Service does not clear snow from the areas in front of or around cluster mailbox units. That duty falls to us—the residents who use them. When snow and ice build up:

• Mail carriers cannot safely access the boxes, which may delay or suspend delivery to the entire cluster.
• Residents (especially seniors or those with mobility challenges) risk slips and falls trying to reach their mail.
• Plow drivers can accidentally damage the units if snow isn’t cleared properly.

A few minutes of shoveling can prevent days of frustration for everyone!

Your Responsibility

If you use a cluster mailbox in Keeseville (whether on Pleasant Street, Route 9, or any neighborhood pod), please clear a path:

• At least 3 feet wide in front of the boxes
• From the road or curb all the way to the mailbox doors
• Remove ice buildup on the apron and around the base

Pro tip: Apply sand or ice melt (non-corrosive to metal) after clearing to prevent refreezing.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

• Coordinate with neighbors—rotate days or share the task if possible.
• Business owners near cluster boxes: please include the mailbox area in your sidewalk clearing routine.

Town Support

The Town of Ausable Highway Department plows roads and shoulders, but cannot clear private paths to cluster boxes. We appreciate your help in keeping our mail flowing smoothly!
