Stay Cool and Safe During the Upcoming Heat Wave
Dear Neighbors,
As we head into the next stretch of summer weather, forecasts show rising temperatures with several days of highs in the upper 80s to low 90s (and possibly hotter with heat index values making it feel even warmer). This is a great reminder to prioritize staying cool, hydrated, and safe—especially for our seniors, children, and anyone with health concerns.
Tips to Beat the Heat
Here are some simple, effective ways to stay comfortable:
- Stay hydrated — Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks that can dehydrate you.
- Limit outdoor activity — Schedule strenuous tasks or exercise for early morning or evening when it’s cooler. Take frequent breaks in the shade.
- Dress smart — Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Keep your home cool — Close blinds or curtains during the day, use fans, and avoid using the oven or stove as much as possible.
- Check on vulnerable neighbors — Especially the elderly, those living alone, or people without air conditioning.
- Never leave children or pets in vehicles — Even for a few minutes.
Cooling Center Available
If your home isn’t air-conditioned or you just need a break from the heat, the Keeseville Free Library (1721 Front Street, Keeseville, NY 12944) is open as a cooling center. Phone: (518) 834-9054. Check their current summer hours for the most up-to-date availability. It’s a welcoming spot with books, Wi-Fi, and a comfortable, cool environment for all ages.

Great News: Port Douglas Beach Is Open!
Looking for a refreshing way to cool down? Port Douglas Beach is now open daily from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This beautiful sandy beach on Lake Champlain offers a perfect spot to swim, relax, picnic, or simply enjoy the breeze. It’s free for the community and a wonderful family-friendly way to beat the heat.
We encourage everyone to enjoy it responsibly—swim safely, wear sunscreen, and follow all posted rules.
Final Reminders
- Monitor weather updates and heat advisories through reliable sources like weather.com or local alerts.
- Know the signs of heat-related illness (dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat) and seek medical help if needed.
- Have an emergency plan for power outages or extreme heat.
The Town of Ausable is committed to keeping our community safe and enjoyable all summer long. Let’s look out for one another and make the most of these warmer days!
Stay cool and stay safe,
-Tim
