As spring blooms across our beautiful region, it’s the perfect time to ensure the health and safety of our furry companions. The Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) is once again offering free rabies clinics for dogs, cats, and ferrets, and we’re encouraging all pet owners in Ausable to take advantage of this vital service. Rabies is a serious, preventable disease, and keeping your pets vaccinated is not only a smart choice—it’s the law in New York State.

Why Rabies Vaccination Matters

Rabies is a deadly virus that can affect both animals and humans, often spread through bites from infected wildlife like bats, raccoons, or foxes—creatures we know are no strangers to our rural landscapes. In New York, all dogs, cats, and ferrets over 4 months of age are required to be vaccinated against rabies. The good news? The CCHD makes it easy and free to stay compliant and keep your pets safe.

Here’s the vaccination timeline to keep in mind:

• First Dose: Pets can be vaccinated as early as 3 months old.
• Booster: One year after the first dose, a booster is required.
• Ongoing Protection: After that, a booster every three years keeps your pet covered for life.

Upcoming Rabies Clinics

The CCHD has scheduled several clinics across Clinton County, and while dates for 2025 are subject to change, you can find the latest details on their website: https://health.clintoncountyny.gov/rabiesclinics/ (a current list is also found below). Clinics are typically held at convenient locations like fire stations and public works buildings, ensuring accessibility for all residents. While none of the clinics are located in Ausable there is one close by in neighboring Peru on September 4th.

Chesterfield (Essex County) will be hosting a rabies clinic at the Knights of Columbus in Keeseville on June 26th. Information about this clinic can be found HERE.

What to Bring and Expect

To make your visit smooth and quick, here’s what you need to know:

• Leashes and Carriers: All pets must be leashed or in a pet carrier—one pet per carrier, please!
• Shot Records: Bring your pet’s vaccination history. If they’ve had a prior rabies shot, this ensures they qualify for a three-year certificate; otherwise, it’s a one-year certificate.
• Puppies and Kittens: They must be at least 3 months old to receive the vaccine.

These clinics are FREE to Clinton County residents, though donations are always appreciated to help support this valuable program.
