Heat Index Alert: Staying Safe and Cool in the Town of Ausable
Dear Town of Ausable Residents,
As we head into the next two days, June 23 and 24, 2025, our region is expected to experience high temperatures and elevated heat index values, expecting to reach well into the 90s with humidity making it feel even hotter. To ensure your safety and comfort, we’re sharing important tips to help you stay cool, limit heat exposure, and remain hydrated during this warm spell.
Understanding the Heat Index
The heat index combines air temperature and humidity to indicate how hot it feels. High heat index values can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups like seniors, children, and those with medical conditions. Stay vigilant and take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Tips to Stay Cool
- Seek Air-Conditioned Spaces: If your home isn’t air-conditioned, visit local cooling spots like the Ausable Town Hall, public library, or nearby businesses with air conditioning. These locations offer a comfortable escape from the heat.
- Use Fans Wisely: Fans can help circulate air, but they’re less effective when temperatures exceed 90°F. Combine fans with shade and hydration for better results.
- Cool Showers or Baths: A quick, cool shower or soaking your feet in cold water can lower your body temperature.
- Wear Lightweight Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton to stay comfortable.
Limiting Heat Exposure
- Avoid Midday Heat: The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Stay in the Shade: If you must be outside, use umbrellas, hats, or shaded areas to reduce direct sun exposure.
- Limit Strenuous Activity: Postpone heavy exercise or outdoor work to cooler parts of the day. If you’re working outside, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
- Check on Neighbors: Reach out to elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they have access to cooling resources and are managing the heat safely.
Staying Hydrated
- Drink Water Regularly: Aim to drink water every 15–20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.
- Eat Hydrating Foods: Incorporate water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and celery into your meals and snacks.
- Keep Water Accessible: Carry a reusable water bottle with you, and keep extra water in your car or at home to ensure you’re never without.
Recognizing Heat-Related Illnesses
Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea) and heat stroke (high body temperature, confusion, rapid pulse). If you or someone else shows these signs, move to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical help immediately if symptoms worsen.
Community Resources
- Ausable Town Hall: Open as a cooling station from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 23 and 24.

- Emergency Services: Call 911 if you or someone else experiences severe heat-related symptoms.

Stay cool and safe,
-Tim
